I am pleased with this series in light of how disappointed I was in the 2nd arc of Seekers. I think the Erins are getting their spark back. The book ends on a serious cliffhanger, and I can't wait for the last book to come out.Interestingly, I would recommend this series to any older fans of the Lion Guard. I would say Bravelands is too descriptive in its deaths and killing for any super young kids, but any middle grade-aged kid or older would love this series if they loved the Lion Guard. I find myself always comparing the two, not because of the plot (Lion Guard is way more lighthearted), but because of the setting. Another good installment in this series.
I encourage fans of other 'Erin Hunter' series and animal fantasy to try this series. (You have to read the first four books, first.)This particular book seemed to slightly lack the feeling of being a standalone volume though. It's sort of like 'stuff happens' as if it were lifted out of the middle of a longer book, that involves books 4, 5, 6. Except we don't have number 6 yet. At the end, you want to keep reading, but it's not a 'cliffhanger'. You just wish the book had kept going. The book is sad though. Since the 'sad part' happens near the end of the book, and then it ends, without any further resolution until book 6 comes out, it's a bit of a letdown.I didn't think they'd really kill that character, only make it seem like they were dead or something, (I did like that character) so the book ending like that left me a bit depressed.
I think they should have left it a cliffhanger if that character was going to die, and then even if they turn out to be dead in book 6 we get a more immediate payoff by the other characters reacting to it for the big ending, which is almost certainly going to involve another 'final battle' with the bad character/s. There's only one other problem I have that I hope gets fixed in the next book. A problem with some 'animal fantasy' books is when they make all the characters of a particular animal species 'bad'. This is rather tasteless because it could be either an allusion to racism or making us think of the entire species as a pest in the real world. In the first three books this wasn't a problem because we also have 'good' or 'neutral' characters of the same species as the 'bad' characters. In this series, I think the only golden wolves we've seen are the 'bad' ones in this specific pack from book 4 onward. This could be fixed just by having some wolves shown even briefly that aren't part of the 'bad pack'.
For people who are interested, golden wolves really are a thing, originally descending from both Ethiopian wolves and Grey wolves but now their own species. Useful, huh!!) so it was nice change from Below. This book continues the saga of Fearless the lion, Thorn the baboon, and Sky the elephant as they struggle to survive and thrive in their home of Bravelands. The best part about this book is the complexity of the plot and world that these authors (Erin Hunter is a collection of authors.) are able to portray. Each animal species has its own unique culture but there is also an over-arching Bravelands culture that all the species are a part of. Also, each species group, for example birds or reptiles, have their own language, and although some animals can speak multiple languages, only the Great Father, or the individual that the Great Spirit is residing in, can speak all the different languages. Finally, they also have different ideas about what the afterlife is like.
I really appreciated how complex they made this story and series overall as I see and read a lot of middle-grade that they make really simplistic because they underestimate children and their comprehension level.I also really appreciated the theme conveyed in this book as it is an important one for children to experience. I know a lot of people are tired of the “growing up” theme, but it is something that children go through and it can be very scary and traumatic, especially when their relationships and friendships start changing and they start to gain their own perspectives on things that may be a lot different from what they thought or were taught. In the end, this was an excellent addition to the series, and I can’t wait to read the next one because this one ended on a cliff-hanger. 5 stars!!!!!!! I just felt that the character, Menace, was very annoying. I felt that Fearless has lately been written way out of character. Also, for a middle grade book, I felt that some parts were a little violent.
I am also starting to get used to the cliffhangers now. I just wish that the books weren't published months apart. By that time, I have forgotten the majority of the events that have happened in the previous one!

The weather is more bipolar than springtime in Pennsylvania, and treachery and deceit are spreading. This entire book is about the turmoil that grips Bravelands as the future becomes more and more uncertain. In this desperation, charismatic and brutal tyrants like Titan and Stinger thrive, but the seeds are sown for their downfall.Fearless continues to bide his time to avenge his father's death and take back his pride, but as Titan's atrocities grow he realizes that the time is coming sooner than he thought. His arc hasn't changed much from the first book, except that Stinger has managed to take advantage of him and Fearless begins to distrust Loyal after his mother's dying words.Thorn's arc is the main focus of this book.
He is chosen for an elite group of guards (disturbingly similar to the Gestapo and similar groups) called Strongbranches and caught in Stinger's 4D chess game. He too is biding his time, but he is forced to commit atrocities to divert suspicion away from him. Unbeknownst to him, Stinger knows exactly what he is planning, and uses it to his advantage. The ending of this book is one of the most dismal things (in fiction) I've ever read because of that. I'm not a big cryer but I was definitely screaming 'NO!' At several points.
Quietly, because I live in a dorm room and I share walls with people.A note on the ending: My theory is that Thorn is the new Great Father. I'm pretty sure he's not going to die because he's the only baboon POV character and switching POV characters at this point would be strange. Also, I can't believe Frog and Starleaf died.Speaking of characters whose deaths I'm still in denial of, MOON! Sky's arc was a journey to seek answers from the Great Spirit. Moon tags along, but Titan and his cronies track them down and kill Moon in a display of power. Because killing a freaking baby really makes one look powerful.Sky gains a power-up and can now see the memories of living animals by touching them. The transitions into the memories are confusing but it does make sense that she would have this power since she's the Great Spirit's temporary vessel. We're also introduced to Silverhorn, who is adorable, and Rock, a lone bull elephant who is a great surrogate parental figure for the two of them.
I'm looking forward to seeing more of those two in the future, but now I'm paranoid because of the body count of this book. Now I have to wait till October and that's the worst part. The fact that I care so much about these characters is why this book gets 5 stars, that and the plot and pacing are well done. I think this series is written better than the later Warrior Cats books, though those are going up in quality. And I think part of the reason is because this is a new series that hasn't been going on for 10 years and having multiple spinoffs. So I hope the plot stays as neatly written as it is and doesn't get tangled, though I must say a manga series or Super Editions would not be unwelcome.
My main priority with stories is the characters, though, and I don't anticipate the character quality dropping anytime soon. I'm glad none of these characters feel like clones of Warriors, Seekers, or Survivors characters (as far as I know). I do see some similarities, such as Sky and Lusa, but they have enough differences to not be the exact same characters. This is quite an accomplishment considering the number of characters the Erins have made must be up in the 100's by now. If you thought that the first installment in the Bravelands series was remarkable for ending on such a cliffhanger, you are in for quite the surprise with Code of Honor! While a book for children and written on that level, the themes are dark, the intrigue is complex, and the underlying message about the sway of leaders is powerfully intense! I loved this book because it brought out emotion as I read; Stinger and Titan are the perfect villains and are so detestable it reminds me of the famous Tigerstar of the Warriors series. As many other reviewers have mentioned, the end is a really edge-of-your-seat cliffhanger.
I was amazed at the talent that brought the story to this point and look forward to reading more in the next book! The reason why I rated this only 4 stars was because of two deaths in the book; one of which I found to be utterly pointless and the other which I saw as being heart-wrenching in a slow and anticlimactic way. The dangers of a well-spoken, convincing leader are embodied in this book and it carries a haunting tone about governance in an age of 'he-said/she-said.' Finally, I'm SO excited for the next book to come out.
This was an excellent followup to the first Bravelands book and it kept the momentum going! This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. Fearless the lion has to live and deal with the lion that killed his father.
Sky the elephant has to now live without her grandmother (The Great Mother) because she also has been murdered. And Thorn the baboon has to live with a ruler that has done many terrible things. None of them now have a role model to follow in their lives. Thorn with his whole community and his beloved friends now against him because of his leader putting false accusations on him. Fearless with his mother now dead. And Sky with her Grandmother now dead.
They must try to create new lives, and they must try to grow strong to defeat those who have defeated them. Fearless asked. ‘Yes Cub of Stars? Said Stinger I don’t know what to do, I’m lost’” (100). Fearless has other siblings to look up to as well as Thorn and Sky but they get split up lots of times so they can’t really help each other. They must fight to earn their freedom and their livesIn the story the main code of Bravelands that nobody must break is “Only kill to survive”.
Now the author of the book really stresses this code throughout the book. This code is a lesson because it should apply to everyone even in this world. Without this code within the book, within Bravelands all of the animals would kill each other for no good reason.
In the book the ruler of the lion pride that Fearless lives in is named Titan. He has broken the code many times throughout the book.
First he killed Fearless’s father without having a reason to. And now he is killing and not even eating many animals. “In Bravelands we live by one code: Only kill to survive and anyone that breaks it will be driven away from Bravelands forever” (20). This code is very sacred and very important in the world of Bravelands. The most important relationship in this book is not between two animals but between three animals. Sky, Fearless, and Thorn are good friends and now that their live is ruined they must work together and never give up with each other to restore balance to their lives and to all of Bravelands. “’ I need to ask you a favor.
Said Thorn Of course, I would do that for you said Fearless’” (150). These three live long friends must save now only their beloved family and friends from this mess but also Bravelands. They would also never turn against each other.
They formed an oath to never harm one another, and an oath can never be broken, ever. This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. After the elephant known as Great Mother died at the end of the first book, Bravelands has fallen on hard times. The land had been drenched by torrential rains, which soon gave way to blistering heat. A rhino named Stronghide proclaims himself to be the new Great Father. It's later reveled that Stronghide, with the help of the treacherous baboon, Stinger Crownleaf, plotted Great Mother's death themselves. Then Stronghide dies, and Stings assumes the title of Great Father himself.
Another thing Stinger does is create a new ranking for the baboons of Brightforest Troop, the Strongbranches. Thorn becomes one of them, hoping this will bring him close enough to Thorn to uncover his crimes, that he killed the last two Crownleaves. But Thorn gets wrapped up in deceptions, too.Among the lions of Titanpride, Fearless waits for the chance to get revenge for his father, Gallant's death. The evil lion Titan has ambitions for Titanpride to rule all of Bravelands. He plans to accomplish this by taking over other prides.
One such pride is ruled by a lion called Dauntless. Titan kills Dauntless. But rather than join Titanpride, Dauntless' son, Keen, takes some of the remaining Dauntlesspride lions to form a new pride of their.
There are also quite a few sweet bonding moments between Fearless and Titan's son, Ruthless. And we learn more about Loyal, the prideless lion who took Fearless under his wing. He is an oath-breaker, but the exact nature of the oath he broke is yet to be seen. In a particularly heartbreaking scene, Fearless' mother, Swift, who was blinded by Titan's mate, Artful in the first book, dies.Sky the elephant is on the quest for answers about Great Mother's death.
She's joined by her little cousin, Moon. The two of them are soon joined by a young female rhino named Silverhorn, as well as a young bull elephant named Rock. Another heartbreaking scenes is when Moon is killed by the lions of Titanpride. Sky learns that she is the only hope of finding the true new great parent.I really enjoyed this book.
I now look forward to reading the third book, Bravelands, Book 3: Blood and Bone. This felt like it took more risks than the previous Bravelands book, and I'm happy to say that most of them paid off. All three of the main characters kept me well invested this time, as opposed to the previous book where Sky barely felt necessary and Fearless's story felt a tad too familiar.
Erin Hunter really ramped up the darkness in this installment too. I was always on the edge of my seat, eager to know what happens next. The ending cliffhanger left me excited for the next book. The best parts of this book were that the plot was constantly moving and the characters grew at a good pace. There was never a dull moment. Thorn got his chance to truly shine in this book. With less emphasis placed on his relationship with Berry, this book allowed him to be a more enjoyable character and his ultimately fruitless, albeit still admirable attempts to expose Stinger made it easy to root for him.I wish I could give this book 5 stars, but two things keep me from doing so. First of all, Berry's characterization continues to bother me to no end. I hate the way she was handled. Like in the last book, she barely has any personality.
I was actually relieved when her being horribly injured by the monkeys (which was actually well handled minus her overly fast and convenient recovery near the end) meant that I'd barely have to deal with her. The love triangle with her and Frog was annoying and pointless, not to mention the fact that this love triangle made it abundantly clear exactly how little substance either character had. The second thing that dragged this book down for me was the fact that none of the characters ever seemed to catch a break. To be clear, I actually love this book's dark tone and that it put its characters through some awful stuff. It's just that it became hard to believe any of the three main characters truly had a chance to succeed thanks to how quickly their hopes were crushed every single time they tried to plan anything.
This book would have had a much bigger emotional impact on me if the characters had been allowed to experience hope for more than extremely rare and fleeting moments. At least I'm still very excited for the next book. Erin Hunter is an amazing writer, all of her books are almost impossible to set down, Bravelands is not an exception. Bravelands: Code of Honor is the second book in this series, most people say that the second movie/ book in a series are nothing compared to the first but in this series, that is no where close to the truth. In the second book the Bravelands is in uproar because Great Mother was murdered and the gods were tearing the land apart with winds, water, and heat to punish those who committed the crime.
I could go on more but that would take could be three pages. I started reading this book in the summer then put it down for awhile because school got me really busy but once I picked it up again, I couldn’t set it down. I gave this book a four out five stars because it was very interesting and a great second book but the cliff hanger drove me crazy. The ending will mess with your emotions and the way you think about friendships. Like which friend you favor more or will do anything for can be a tricky decision but Fearless is left to decide. If I were him I would not even try to decide but he favors Stinger over Thorn because Stinger did save his life and take care of so I guess it was reasonable but to do something that drastic was anything but sane.

I was especially sad about little ones dying and the animals closest to the lion Fearless. The elephant Sky carried a heavy burden.
I did not expect all this tragedy in a children’s bookbut the animal kingdom is survival of the fittest I guess. Brutal. There were crocodiles and rhinoceroses in this story and vicious monkeys. The vultures are always interesting because they can eat carrion and sense if a death was clean or if there was foul play. The elephants read bones too so there is some interesting mysticism. Great cliffhanger at the end. Again, my daughter would give this book 5 stars.
